Life nothing but a poker game?

Is life nothing
but a poker game,
dealt cards
before we’ve even seen them,
where the odds of winning over loosing
may increase with experience
and resources invested
but in the end
remain cold luck?

  1. I don’t know if it is all just a poker game but being able to keep a good poker face when the shit hits the fan is a keen asset to have.

Great observation and thanks for the reminder…. I’ve been told mine sucks or is non-existent, either way I’m screwed 😦 . Any idea where to get lessons? 🙂

  2. I’m reminded of something Einstein once said (as near as I can remember): “I refuse to believe that God plays dice with the Universe.” Personally I believe that the notions of free will and Divine purpose are not incompatible. As humans, we have free will, which naturally creates a certain amount of randomness in the world. But I do believe in a Divine purpose, in a larger sense, and while I do not claim to know what that is, I do believe that it cannnot be thwarted by the will of man. Nice poem btw.

Nicely put. Will think about that a little longer……

  3. I do believe that we are each destined for something; that each of us has a purpose in life, even if that purpose is never revealed in such a way that our earthly human minds can see. In that sense, yes, certain cards are dealt, but the resources to deal with the difficult situations are given to us, if only we are wise enough to look for them and, more importantly, to use them!

I overall agree, especially when it comes to my own person. I wrote this because I was made aware of someone else’s hardship, a child, who in my eyes never had a chance and that’s where my usual ‘we are in control of our lives’ – theory gets severly challenged. On the other hand, nobody is in control really, but we are in control of how we react to those ‘out of our control’ events I guess.

  4. I think that’s about it,plain and simple. It would be nice to think it otherwise-bad luck being a stage on the way to Nirvana or that we all have our own ferryman. Like a fly or a mosqito in the shadow of a flykiller,we are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The ones that get away are just lucky for a while.
    Nevertheless find Murderofravens comment interesting

hey, welcome back 🙂 . Thank you for making this comment, cause it reinforced my own belief which agrees more with Einstein’s comment then the poker game analogy. Truth might be a whole other matter but science was never about truth….. 🙂

  5. Short, interesting and a high degree of truthful comparison. Going from the world of the familiar to the unknown world – kind of like travelling from earth to heaven(or hell, I suppose – this is a hot topic) seems to be understand if we use parabels………..Jesus used parables alot….the farmer sowed seed in his field some of the seed grew, some died, some only partially grew and then died. This is like the word of God…………by reading some will grow, some will ignore the Bible and some will read and not understand. But it is still Jesus and Christmas that we all love the best………..at any rate……The poem is about life and living life with the Card Dealer – that’s God himself. Impressive, if I understand how I remember the card dealer and his character, if I am close to him in the casino, if I am study his moves and follow his instructions and then have an attitude change to positive life surrendered to him…..we then have a new type of addiction. Not gambler’s luck but God’s faith becomes real. The more we know about the card dealer, the more we understand God Himself. And He can even become our personal friend…………All human analogies have a human weakness…….to be addicted to God is good; but to be addicted to gambling is not God – therefore faith has a different basis and understanding. Addiction to God means that loving God is the reason for living. Priase the Lord.
